Read all Terms and Conditions Carefully
Terms of hire will differ from supplier to supplier so check all the conditions of both the rental company and the booking agent before you confirm your reservation.

Comparing Rates - Check What's Included
If you compare rental rates at more than one site make sure you compare on a like for like basis. Some list low prices and then add options like insurance where as others include these as standard.

Don't Pay to Upgrade at the Collection Point
Most car rental companies do not guarantee the exact car you will receive, just the group of car. Often they try to sell you an upgrade upon collection but this is normally more expensive than pre booking the correct group.

Check the Car and Paperwork
Before leaving the depot check the paperwork states exactly what you have paid for including all insurances, taxes, additional drivers and any extras. Examine the car and tyres to ensure any damage however minor is shown on the paperwork to avoid any dispute later.

Petrol - Check How the Car Must be Returned
Normally you will need to return the car with a full tank (which means full) so make sure you know where the nearest filling station to the airport is located. Rental companies levy hefty fees if they have to refuel the car.

Keep the Paperwork With You At All Times
This is often a legal requirement so don't drive without both your driving licence and rental agreement. It will also be required in the event of accident or breakdown

and finally return the car on time
An extra days hire can be levied even if you are only a few minutes late returning the car. Bear in mind that the petrol stations, roads around the airport and the rental depot itself can all be very busy so make sure you allow plenty of time.

IMPORTANT - Ensure your car has Adequate Luggage Capacity
Because cars are booked by group and boot sizes vary dramatically between models it is impossible to establish exactly how much luggage capacity there will be until you collect the car at the pick up point. From personal experience it always seems to be smaller than expected so it is often advisable to book a larger car.

Make Sure You Book the Correct Size Car

There is no standard definition of groups for car hire so they differ from rental company to rental company

However the following gives you a rough idea of what size car you are likely to receive.

MINI
A small 2/3 door car of similar size to a Ford Ka and suitable for 2 adults with limited luggage.

ECONOMY
A 2/3 door car of similar size to a Ford Fiesta, suitable for 2 adults plus 2 children with limited luggage

COMPACT
A 2/3 or 4/5 door car of similar size to a Ford Focus. Seating 5 passengers at a squeeze but ideal for a small family with a reasonable amount of luggage space

INTERMEDIATE
Similar size to a Ford Fusion. Ideal for a small family or 5 passengers at a squeeze with a reasonable amount of luggage

STANDARD
A 4/5 door car of similar size to a Ford Mondeo. Seating 5 passengers with good luggage capacity

COMPACT SUV
Vary widely from supplier to supplier,

PREMIUM / VAN
Normally a 4/5 door vehicle of similar size to a Ford Galaxy. Seating 7 passengers with limited luggage or 5 with ample luggage capacity
